As Environmental Leader reports, Dole Food Co., Westlake Village, CA, has launched five Premium Baby Salad blends in new clamshells made from 70% recycled plastic, with 50% of the energy used to create the container powered by the sun. The clamshell bears the #1 Recycle rating, which signifies that it can be disposed of in a recycling bin.

Although the above statement is not completely untrue, it does not mean that PET clamshells with a #1 symbol are readily recyclable. In fact, most municipalities in North America do not recycle clamshells and consider them to be contaminants. Moreover, the #1 symbol is not a "recycle rating" but simply a mere resin identification code.
