Spring phone lineup continues green growth

Vtech® Communications, Inc. of Beaverton, OR, a wholly owned subsidiary of VTech Holdings Ltd. and the largest U.S. cordless phone manufacturer, has announced that its new spring cordless phone lineup will continue to support environmentally friendly practices. The phones will maintain Energy Star® and RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive) certifications and will include packaging improvements designed to reduce environmental impact.

This year, the company's entire cordless phone product line has been developed with existing ratings in mind, to deliver the same or better performance as comparable models while using less energy. In addition, the company has introduced new club-store packaging that is 100% recyclable and has reduced its gift box size by 41%. The smaller-sized packaging uses 99% less plastic, with a total of 14 oz of PET plastic reduced from each box.

Other new club-store packaging practices include adding a more environmentally friendly, water-based coating to replace UV coating on all gift boxes, which reduces the amount of chemicals used in production and recycling, as well as streamlines processing steps, thereby reducing environmental impact. These process improvements include eliminating third-party packaging support, temporary packaging, and duplicate processes to pack/unpack/repack. Overall, these practices result in decreased emissions and promote a more environmentally sound business, says the company.

"VTech is committed to making a difference in promoting the sustainability of our planet," says Matt Ramage, senior vice president of product management, VTech Communications, Inc. "Our products are designed with reduced environmental impact and energy efficiency in mind, and we will continue to focus on improving our environmental practices around packaging and processes to make a difference in the future. These steps are part of our ongoing commitment to contributing to a greener and cleaner world."

VTech's 2009 cordless phones became available through retailers and club stores beginning in April 2009.
