New Sharpie packs have the write (green) stuff

Switch to a theft-resistant paperboard lamination provides sustainability improvements.

Newell Rubbermaid Office Products, Atlanta, a worldwide supplier in the manufacturing and marketing of writing instruments, art products and office organization, selected Natralock® from MWV (www.meadwestvaco.com) paperboard-based security packaging for their Sharpie Fine Retractable 10-count marker pack in club stores.

Newell Rubbermaid Office Products selected MWV's Natralock to replace their previously used "mock-clamshell" packaging after improvements on sustainability measures were demonstrated.

As Packaging World has reported before, Natralock comprises Coated Natural Kraft® CNK® run through a patented extrusion-coating process that applies a heat-seal material, as well as sandwiches the board around a polyester film that provides tear-resisting theft deterrence.

"MWV was great to work with from the start-very responsive to package design ideas and proactive in providing design parameters," says Newell's Randy Canlas, packaging leader, markers. "With strong sustainability features, product security, curl-resistance and graphics capabilities, Natralock packaging is a perfect fit for the Sharpie club pack. The new product packaging resulted in a 60 percent reduction in plastic used, which was attractive from an environmental perspective."

Natralock paperboard-based security paperboard packaging is made from a renewable resource, is recyclable, and uses 50 to 60% less plastic on average than traditional polyvinyl chloride clamshells.
