Aluminum-can ring pulls from Rexam are now doing double-duty in a charitable project organized by The Philippine Community Fund (PCF). Under the project, Rexam has donated 100,000 aluminum can ends, the tabs of which will be used to make a selection of striking handbags by people in the Philippines. The resulting purses will then be sold in the U.K., to provide their makers with much-needed income. Says Rexam, the rest of the can end will be recycled to help build a new school to educate Filipino children who otherwise would have no access to education.
PFC runs three of its own schools for children living in the poorest squatter areas in their region. Two of the schools are located on rubbish dumps, while the other is in a cemetery. Children are selected from the poorest families and often have been working on the open dump sites.
John Kirby, sales manager for Rexam in U.K. and Ireland, says, "We are delighted to be involved in this project, which provides both education to children and income to their families. The tabs will be made into handbags by the most disadvantaged parents of the children who would normally be working on the open dump site scavenging for pieces of plastic and metal to sell."
Jane Walker, CEO of PCF, says, "The parents are now earning four-times higher than their normal income, and they have a real sense of achievement, not just because they have mastered a new skill, but also because they know that they are helping our charity to raise money as well as earning an income for themselves."
In Manila, PCF has started a Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) that handles more than eight tonnes of waste materials a day. The rest of the aluminum from the can ends will either be sold in the MRF, with the profits going toward funding the activities of the school, or it will be used to decorate another school that is being made from unwanted shipping containers.
The 100,000 ring pulls will make approximately 300 handbags. A percentage of the profit from each bag will provide the parents with a substantial income, while the remaining profit will be invested back into the various PCF programs.

This sounds like the perfect solution to helping the less fortunate, it reminded me of the Boat Donation campaign, which helped several hunderds victims of the Katrina hurricane rebuild their home.
It is really a heartening information that ring-pull handbags provide income for world’s poorest. Interestingly this income is sustainable as a percentage of the profit from each bag will provide the parents with a substantial income, while the remaining profit will be invested back into the various PCF programs. One could hardly imagine that 'Ring-pull handbags' would be making a lot of interesting news for having brought real change in the lives of the disadvantaged in Philippines in a sustainable way - thanks to Rexam and the Philippine Community Fund (PCF). It's unbelievable how some people struggle to survive another day, this program couldn't have been placed better. I am sure they have a better life now, and their children get the chance to go to school too, otherwise they would have been working on the open dump site too with their parents and forget about education. There are many ways to improve people like these lives, you could donate car, or something else you wouldn't need anymore, the important thing is that some really needy people would get helped.
Anything that can make a difference to some of the poorest and disadvantaged children in the world is a good idea. Education for children is a basic human right, and childrens charities are making really inspirational headway into finding innovative ways to support this and offer these children a future they deserve.
These bags are fabulous but you need a bigger range and much better designs. And why limit yourself to just bags? What about clothes, cushions, covers for storage boxes, picture frames, even lamp shades - I'd like to see that. The choices are endless.
If you get good designers who know what sells in first world countries you could really make a big difference to the people who make them. Not only financially, but also creatively.
Just contact designers and ask them to do it for free. You'll be surprised at how many are eager to help good causes. After all, here I am, a complete stranger, giving you free marketing advice.
Best wishes.
