Waste material-based reusable bag wins U.K. award

A national campaign to find Britain’s greenest ideas has awarded Shameem Kazmi of Birmingham, U.K., with a top Environmental Award. Kazmi competed against more than 500 other nominations and will be presented with the award at a ceremony at the House of Commons. Kazmi’s winning paper will also be published, and he will be considered to represent the U.K. in the European Awards for the Environment.

The award was given to Kazmi for the development of a reusable bag that is made from waste materials and is completely compostable. “The bag can hold up to 15 kilograms and can be reused over and over again,” he says. “The difference with this bag and other products in the market is that this bag is made from waste paper. It is s certified by SGS and OK compost, and meets the EN13432 standard.

“This is a special form of paper that has been developed with a mill and is specially produced to create a paper bag like no other in the market.”

The awards are organized by The Green Organisation, an independent, nonpolitical, nonactivist, nonprofit environmental group dedicated to recognizing and promoting environmental best practice.
