[1]Details on Walmart’s plan to implement a Sustainable Packaging Scorecard will be revealed at a special Walmart Sustainable Packaging Conference at Expo Pack México, on June 25 at Centro Banamex, Mexico City, Mexico. Walmart says the conference will give Mexican packagers and the packaging supply chain that supports Walmart’s suppliers the first detailed public view of the scorecard’s objective, scope, and timeline. All registered attendees of Expo Pack México, running June 23 to 26, are welcome to attend the event.
During the conference, Walmart also plans to provide details on the development of its Mexican Packaging Sustainable Value Network (SVN), which is a committee that will work in collaboration with Walmart on the launch of the scorecard. Walmart will describe the SVN’s role and makeup, and how it plans to contact and communicate with potential members during and after the event.
“Walmart first announced its Sustainable Packaging Scorecard for suppliers to U.S. stores during Pack Expo 2006. The scorecard was launched in the U.S. in 2008 as the first step of a plan to roll out the scorecard internationally,” says Charles D. Yuska, president and CEO of the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Association (PMMI), [2] which organizes both the Pack Expo and Expo Pack Mexico trade shows.
Walmart reports that it intends to launch the scorecard in Mexico toward the latter part of this year, and is speaking at the expo by invitation from PMMI. This follows a recent announcement in May by Walmart Canada CEO and president David Cheesewright at Toronto’s PakEx that Walmart Canada is also launching a Sustainable Packaging Scorecard. Why create another standard that will only be used at one retailer? What about one with broad market appeal, such as JumpGauge Interactive Labeling (http://www.JumpGauge.com/ [5])? Consumers could use it at all retailers, not just Walmart. Interactive Labeling also offers greater transparency and knowledge transfer other than a simple questionnaire.
