I guess I am surprised that
I guess I am surprised that the numbers are so low. I know that this is opening Pandora's box; but what was the criteria for determining a sustainable package? Was recycled content enough? Down sizing? Improved cube utilization?
QR Codes for Food Packaging
Just because you can do it, doesn't mean you should do it. Food safety, promotion of healthier food and environmentally friendly packaging are demanding attention on packaging real estate. QR codes are sexy and cutting edge but with a limited food packaging footprint, can they be considered a necessity.Envision a shopper in the food store. They scan a product's bar code with their smart phone. Their phone app shows them competitive pricing and coupon availability. Are they now going to take additional time to scan a QR code for additional information? There will be exceptions to this (larger format packages in a segment given to promotion); but until a unique, valued, consumer functionality is tied to QR codes, one that can't be mirrored by an app tied to a product code, I expect limited adaptation of QR codes on primary food packaging.
Package Designers?
"The intended audience that uses the database is retailers, brand owners, and converters." What about as a reference guide for package designers?
Benefits
While I applaud Boulder Canyon for "doing something." I don't see the immediate benefits of bio bags. This not only pertains to this bag, but also to other compostable snack packaging. The infrastructure to take advantage of these attributes simply doesn't exist. The only justification I can see is the " chicken and the egg" argument; but it sure seems like a long way to go.
Initial Inquiry
Use recycled content. Educate your customer about proper disposal for recycling. Sandra is correct, in most cases the infrastructure is there. You could even reference Earth911.com Monitor the progress of the composting infrastructure. My guess is that it won't dramatically progress in the U.S. until extended producer responsibility becomes a reality.
