The Ultimate Re-Usable Bag
Dear Sir, I applaud your efforts and the scientific data that supports your position. I agree with you whole heartedly, however be forwarned that the whole "anti-plastic" movement that is taking place currently has little to do with scientific data and everything to do with public opinion and perception. More people such as yourself need to come out with scientific data and specific information that supports the reality that plastics as a medium are not all bad. I have personally been wondering for close to a year now about where my peers in the plastic industry have been and why no one is standing up for plastics and the value and benefits that they offer over the alternatives. I find it ironic that we continue to "ban" things based on fear and not fact. Once again in our efforts to raise the conscious awareness of the masses regarding the pro's and con's of the products that we come into contact with in our daily lives, we have turned the "green" movement into a marketing campaign based on our own agendas. We all need to work together to improve things and not pit ourselves on one side of the fence from each other.
Re-usable, reduced packaging option
Hello Wrager, What we propose is that we create for you a custom thermoformed inner pack that is product specific. This inner pack will suspend your product and absorb any impact by acting as an internal spring. This allows you to eliminate almost all of the internal corrugated material and reduce the amount of corrugated used on the outer or master carton. Additionally, these pieces are made from recycled HDPE, nest together on a pallet when not in use, and can be sent back to your company for re-use by the end customer i.e. Wal-Mart, Costco, etc. You may contact me directly if you would like at sslavin@dordan.com. Thank you.
Waterboy, you have some valid
Waterboy, you have some valid concerns. In my opinion, you seem to be one of the few people that are digging below the surface claims for the real issues. Here are my thoughts on the issues you are questioning. 1.) At this point I would listen closely to what the recycling companies are saying as they are the ones who deal with scrap after a product has been used. Until there is enough infrastructure/ ROI to warrant dealing with a new resin I believe that it cannot be a positive at this point. It is my understanding that there has been a lot of issues with PLA contaminating the PET stream as they are hard to differentiate at a glance. 2.) Yes, it is my opinion that anything that is made from a food source, if the demand is high enough, will have a negative impact on the available food quality, quantity available and thus cost. In closing I would like to state that the current "green" movement has a lot of the "Emperor's new clothes" symptoms and many companies are simply using this "hot" topic to get their name out and to capitalize on the opportunities that present themselves. It has taken us as a species a long time of testing and learning to get where we are today. What I believe is happening is that there is a heightened sense of conscious awareness among the masses in which we are questioning everything that has gotten us to this point thus far. I believe that when all is said and done that we will realize that while there are definitely things that need to be improved, we must all be willing to sacrifice some of our personal comforts and behaviors in order to truly change things for the better. This of course is just my opinion.
One last question for you....hopefully
Hello Adam, I did have one last question. Do you know if it is true that if PVC is incinerated/ combusted at a high enough temperature that hydrochloric acid is not released as claimed? Thanks,
Hi Adam, This is very
Hi Adam, This is very helpful. Thank you. I have finally gotten some good, data supported information thanks to your' help. It is very much appreciated.
Hi Kitt, I appreciate your
Hi Kitt, I appreciate your reply and am aware of most of what you said. I was wondering if there was any conclusive proof as to it's harmful effects on humans and also where does the feedstock from recycled PVC as used in plumbing etc originate from. Again I appreciate your' reply as it seems that most people are afraid to say anything about PVC for fear that they get mislabled as a "radical" for speaking out against the consensus. As a thermoformer that does not extrude our own materials we have no allegiance to any pareticular material other than what is in the best interest of the customer and end consumer. Also don't most municipalities chlorininate our water? And what about the chlorine in swimming pools? We are probably consuming far more chlorine from those sources than any PVC plastics that we may come into contact with. And how come PVC is o.k. for medical purposes such as I.V. bags etc. when in those cases the contents that are in direct contact with the PVC are ingested directly into our bodies. Additionally, I thought that the flexible PVC's (Blood Bags, I.V.'s etc.) were potentially more hazardous than rigid PVC sheet as used in packaging. Thanks
Recovery Series - Topic 2: Universal PET Recyclability Myth
Gentleman first I want to say that both of you offer a realistic and factual account of the situation/ hurdles we face currently with PET packaging. One of the major issues as I see it, aside from infrastructure, ROI, etc. is that with so many variations of PET materials available, i.e. RPET, RPETG, GAG, PETG, APET even if the recycling centers have the means to sort and segregate containers with the number "1" recycling symbol (PETE), how do they then take the next step and keep cross contamination between the different types of PET's? if there is only a one type of recycling symbol to identify all of these different materials shouldn't we be thinking of some method for identifying the various PET films and co-extrusions? I'm curious to see if this has been addressed as I haven't heard of anything personally. Thanks.
