  • QR codes and other alternatives

The two dimensional barcodes for Quick Response (QR codes) compete with radio frequency identification tags (RFID) on packaging to achieve basically the same end. A significant benefit of using QR codes is that their use is (currently) free of any licensing requirements, so it is an inexpensive option to implement. RFID tags can be configured to have a much wider variety of applications, store more data, and literally hundreds of items (on pallets, for example) can be scanned simultaneously ... but they do cost more. Another technology trend that has interesting potential for the future of packaging is AR technology - or Augmented Reality. In this scenario the packaging could actually interact with devices like smart phones and such to deliver a wealth of information (sustainability/recycling info, Nutrition Facts, etc.) in a dynamic way.
