  • Greenometer with Sustainable Score Cards and ISO14XXX

Dear Martin I agree with comments. There is no "easy way or paths" to change way People are measuring with their "own" metrics and their "own" feelings. If you keep it "too simple" as to reduce your Greenometer to a Carbon Footprint, or to REnewable Aspects: it is very dangereous and in most of case it transfers pollutions. "Keep it simple" as I have read in a lot of "Greenwashing exercices": is not a scientific to go deeper and to understand the complexity of Life! SSC Metrics, in well done in the spirit of ROQ&ROI-ISO10014- and with the RADAR Technics are taken into account all the functionalities of a packaging system because a packaging does not exist for itself!. The packaging system must be measured and analysed in regard of its Effectiveness and Efficency for the processed & packed product and its entire life cycle (LCB,LCI,LCA,LCC...). It means that the SSC of the "ECO or Green Way" in the spirit of ECO-Design (ISO14062) must have a RADAR Tool to measure the System Performances on 5 Perspectives: User Perspectives (Function Convenience, Shelf ...) Packer Perspectives (Function Filling, Processing ...) Converter Perspectives (Economy, Ecology, Energy) Ecological Perspectives (T.E.M.P.S) T.E.M.P.S.: Toxics, Energy, Materials, Process Efficiency, Scraps & Wastes Improvements Perspectives (Innovations) Strategy and Actions Plan To go to your actions plan and Tasks Deployement Chart for your Teams: apply the United Nation Strategy for Sustainable Design & ISO14 Serials (For Processes, Production and Products: - Rethink the Product and its Functions - Reduce Energy and Material consumption - Replace harmful substances - Recycle - Reuse - Reduce the "Entropy" (Losses of Informations ...) - Do the right think (Effectiveness) and do it right (Efficiency) All of those Items are Causes of Environemental Effects on Human Life, Future, Nature, Soil, Air, Water, Resources Depletion .... And Causes and Effects Matrix can get a SMART (Specific Measurable Achievable Relevant, Traceable) Metrics and Scales for Evaluation BUT One cannot be "calculated": your perceived Values: your way of life, your choice, your cultural evaluation of what is right or what is wrong ! SO yes: you will have to choice for your Customers Perspectives and Your Business SSC a Solution WHICH WON'T BE IDEAL EVERYWHERE ! as the "ideal, Universal " Solution is an illusion. To do your choice with respecting Human, Nature & Future: it is not possible keep it too "simple": Life is complex! and the best way to meaure and analyse the complexity is to go step by step with scientific methods and approved "Standards" Hope this will help Kindest Regards Gérald

  • NO CHOICE IS PERFECT BUT YOU HAVE TO MAKE ONE

A lot has been said already. I do not understand why People are looking for the "ideal solution" as this is a pure illusion. Please find herewith a Summary (based on a more complex LCA) in form of SSC for 7 perspectives and RADAR done for vegetal oils "Green" and fossils "Black"oils. Summary RENEWABLE : Green + Black: - AIR POLUTIONS : Green +/- Black: - SOIL POLUTIONS : Green - Black: + WATER POLUTIONS : Green - Black: + GREEN HOUSE GAS : Green -/+ ? Black - ENERGY USED : Green - Black + NATURE FOOTPRINT : Green - Black + As you can see: no choice is perfect and have "+" as "positive points" everywhere ! For the Future Perspective (RENEW) as Fossils Resources have no infinity, immortality: Vegetal is a MUST as it can RENEW itself. But the Today Vegetable "GREEN" Oils Systems, compared to Fossils "BLACK" Oils Systems must be clearly improved regarding - their Effectiveness (The right one) - and their Efficiency (Do it right) as Vegetal Oils Systems (8 have been analysed) are - using more water - creating more green house gases - releasing more toxics to soil (Partially) - using more "nature footprint" So yes give a Chance to Vegetal but only if it the right time to do it and the right material for your application and your Business Pespectives/ Choices Otherwise you have the risk to transfert negative ECOlogical and ECOnomical Impacts and you are probably missing opportunities to save Energy and Material on the correct Priorities and Choices for Your Business. Hope this will help Kindest Regards Gerald Picture of Summary (.pdf) [attachment:pdf=SSC TRADE OFFS]

  • Lost in Green Land?

I agree with Timothy. Probably all those "Green Initiatives" you are talking about are relevant on particular and different point of views ... but those "point of views" may be not relevant for your needs and your strategy. So the best start point is to clarify what you need, what you have with Today system to fulfill your needs, how much does it "cost" you today in Tocicity potentials, Energy, Materials, Process efficiency & Scaps (T.E.M.P.S) and to measure your Today environemental impacts compared with the ones of the Alternatives proposed to you as "Green Initiative". Then you may be able to analyze if one of the "Green Initiatives" is given you improved or new stategical, economical and ecological advantages for your products. If those "Green Initiatives" have really "added value" for environemental issues: you should be able to sell it as well :-) Hope this well Gerald ECOscore6

  • Paper or Plastic: it depends of your needs.

Dear Paul 1) Sustainability is as well for small and mid-size companies A lot of them (the majority in Europe) are ahead the "BIG ones" and have programs to avoid Toxicity and to improve energy, materials and process efficiency reducing scraps : They win GHG Points/Taxes for example in using innovative technologies** which save limited fossils resources (depletion impact indicators) to allow future existence of humans in future ECO Systems - which the basic of Sustainability. * With better MEEP-Measures of Energies Efficiency Performances and CO2 reduction potentials * With less Toxicity for Human and Nature ... 2) Refine your Packaging Options should not mean high costs or to go to all "paper, wood or corn" The first "RE" of the Sustainability Program of United Nations is "RE-think" your product system and its functions. The first step of ECO-Design/ECO Conception ISO14062 or the US-EPA Standard is a functional approach to analyze all functions your product gives to consumer/customer 3) It means if for the function "protection" of your packaging system the best material today is plastic then your alternative is not to change to paper! but in first priority - within the plastics family and process - to find out what is the Best Available Technic to do savings on "T.E.M.P.S. (Toxicity Energy Materials Process Scraps) and THEN - eventually and if needed - to identify the BIO-PLASTIC or RENEWABLE MATERIAL - really "GREEN and SUSTAINABLE This must fulfill your function "protection" as good or better than the old material without added values you would not be able to sell. The savings you will do on T.E.M.P.S should almost "automatically" reduce your negative environmental impacts and allow you to make economical choices 4) So do not sell a more expensive sustainable solution but savings to your management and communicate the better sustainable scores cards to your customers with fair price Hope this will help Gerald - ECOscore6
