The scope of Wal-Mart Stores
The scope of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Packaging Sustainable Value Network is to provide a link between the packaging industry and our customers and members to achieve the company’s sustainability goals. (available at http://walmartstores.com/Sustainability/) The PKG SVN facilitates information flow, develops tools to help make purchasing decisions, tracks progress and communicates activities to our stakeholders. Working within our membership base we have provided our Buyers and Product Suppliers with the following direction for compostable and biodegradable packaging to be used in Wal-Mart Stores and Sam's Clubs within the United States. 1) Identify the environmental benefit 2) Confirm the finished package meets all local, regional and national legislation including Toxics in Packaging 3) Recyclability has been addressed per the APR guidance documents posted online. In addition compostable packages must meet ASTM D6400 or D6866 and Biodegradable packages as measured by ASTM D5526, D5511, D6776 with a 90% conversion of test material carbon to CO2 + CH4 relative to the control in 2-3 years or ASTM D5988 with a 90% conversion of test materials carbon to CO2 in 12-18 months.
