Shorewood Packaging, a business of International Paper, has launched TerraGreen®, said to be the first renewable water-based coating. This coating was developed by Shorewood’s strategic supplier, ACTEGA Terra GmbH of Germany and is available from Shorewood through a limited exclusive agreement for its use at the company’s facilities in North America and China.
Says Greg Chup, manager of innovation and new product development for Shorewood, “TerraGreen’s formulation is based on resins and waxes extracted from plant and tree sources. It is solvent-free and totally free of petrochemicals.”
TerraGreen can be applied as a gloss or matte coating on an offset litho press. It has all of the essential characteristics of traditional water-based coatings, including high performance, very good migration properties, and resistance to scratching, scuffing, and blocking (it will not pick or offset), says Shorewood.
TerraGreen is the newest addition to Shorewood’s greenchoice™ Environmental Solutions initiative for packaging and displays. Paperboard packaging that utilizes this water-based coating can be recycled when collected and processed in a municipal recycling program. TerraGreen coating has been tested and assessed as “readily biodegradable” by WESSLING Laboratories GbmH of Germany.
