Tetrapak Recycling in the US

JeffE

Role: Consultant

I'm advising a recycling group looking for novel alternative approaches for recycling Tetrapak cartons (and gable top poly coated juice cartons) in the US. I'm not talking about the advanced $50 million investment type of facility which exist only a few places in the world - I'm talking about more realistic, localized approaches/technologies that can be done regionally. Most Tetrapak that doesn't wind up in the landfill is shipped somewhere far away on another continent, with unknown end of life. For a packaging with many sustainable attributes, the current end of life options need improvement... I welcome any innovative suggetsions.
Thank you

Tetra re-cycling

Phil Sissons...

TOP is a producer of solid fibtreboard, recycled packaging paper and corrugated packaging based in the South of Poland. We are also looking for a low cost method of recovering the virgin fibre used in Tetra and similar packs. In Europe the amount of recycled paper used in packaging is much higher than in the US. Consequently, the number of times that paper is recycled means that poor quality reject fibres now account for more than 10%. Recovering more virgin fibre from this type of packaging will help to reduce this.
We are thinking that we can use our existing recovered paper pulpers and then remove the plastic or aluminium through our existing sorters. Technically, this is relatively easy and low cost, at least for us. Recovered aluminium has a value but the problem lies with the plastics, which would create substantial disposal cost.
Any ideas that you or other people may have would also be appreciated.
Thanks,
Phil

recycling tetra...the closer the better

Alex W...

I read an article about Tecpar in Curitiba Brazil that has a plant set up to recycle tetra-paks. You may see a link to it, if this info is current , on the tetra-pak website.
You can see some interesting leads by googling "tetra pak recycling"... here is one where British are sending to Scandinavia.

and the worthy Wiki:

lastly this site references Ohio and Canada, this may work out best for you.
