Pulp-moulded card/paper products help needed please.

Hi, I am currently leading a project to try and reduce the amount of plastics buried into the ground by the utilities (electricity & gas) when installing their networks. The main part of this is to replace a plastic box with a bio-degradable box manufactured from pulp-moulded paper/cardboard. The plastic box currently used serves no purpose after around 3 to 4 hours of being buried.

As a complete novice to the world of using pulp moulded products I need a few pointers!

1. Over what time period will a pulp moulded product degrade when buried in the ground?
2. What chemicals are added to this pulp to enable it to have a few hours of water-proofing?
3. Is it a cost-effective process for annual volumes of around 3,000 to 8,000 units per year?

Any help or leads will be greatly apprecietd.

Many thanks

pulp molded packaging

Answers to your questions

1/ yes pulp packaging will compost in the ground, time lines are impossible to predict ie desert or rain forest, remember this is wood fibre
2/ how moist is the environment ,sometimes it only requires after pressing to achieve enough time ,other time its a combination of after press with a starch additive .by the way the starch additive will enhance the composting and decrease the cycle time, water soluble waxes can be used but i wouldn't recommend them.
3/ yes it is easily enough quantity, our minimum is 100 pcs at a time ,our onetime, design setup is usually less than 1000.00. for a quote

Thanks for the feedback, it is both helpful and appreciated. I will use this to take the project to a feasibility stage and once we've done this I will contact you.

Thanks

Gary,

You may want to take a look at one of our Greener Package 2010 winners, Ball Horticultural Co. They won an award for their new SoilWrap® bio-based plantable, compostable plant container. Sounds like a very similar application.
