Flexible Packaging vs Cartons vs Biodegradable materials

Packaging sustainability is of prime importance in this contemporary market. Can anyone suggest which one has the least carbon footprint among packaging materials: flexible packaging, paperboard cartons or biodegradable materials? As each one has its own advantages and disadvantages, can anyone suggest what should be the approach for a greener package?
