Randee Jo Stroud

Hi! My name is Randee Jo. I am in the works of trying to launch a line of organic almond snacks as well as nitrite/nitrite and preservative free jerky. I literally have just started and I am currently selling on etsy.com. I am looking for packing that is eco-friendly/non-toxic and if possible biodegradable. Does anyone have any suggestions or could anyone point me in the right direction, I am brand new at all of this... Thank you so much, Randee Jo

Environmentally-Friendly Plastic Bag Options
John Zeiger...There are 3 environmentally-friendly options for plastic packaging -
recycled, biodegradable and compostable.
*Since you're packaging food, recycled plastic is not an option because
the FDA won't approve it as it contains contaminants.
*Biodegradable bags are made of polyethylene (same as non
environmentally-friendly bags) containing an additive that allows them
to biodegrade in water, a landfill or compost pile anywhere from 9
months to 5 years depending on the specific conditions of the
environment.
*Compostable plastic is a special classification of biodegradable; it's
plastic that degrades quickly as per ASTM 6400 - 60% biodegradation
within 180 days in commercial composting conditions. Some
compostable plastic bags are partially made with renewable resources
such as glucose, starch and cellulose (combined with a petroleum-based
product)

Packaging ideas
Carolyn Allen...Reusable packaging is very green... look for small canisters, wood, or fabric sacks.
And may I suggest that you check out hospital cafeterias as an outlet for your products? My husband was recently treated for cancer and I would have loved to find some healthy snacks in the snack-bar. You'd think healthy food would be a no-brainer for health facilities :-)

We at Maverick have develoed a multi-layer film with PET which would be great for snacks as you need good oxygen barriers. All being made with an additve that enables the bags to biodegrade in landfills where your package most likely will end up.

Being brand new at this as you say, you may not be familiar with the ongoing industry discussions about biodegradable packaging and may find it helpful to spend a few minutes reading this article.

From an eco-friendly perspective, we custom manufacture a wide range of films and pouches and we’re most proud of the fact that all are made using solar power. This allows us to eliminate over 1.1 million pounds of CO2 emissions annually. We have a national network of warehouses that minimize the carbon footprint associated with fulfillment. We use a solventless lamination process that improves worker safety by eliminating exposure to dangerous solvents and eliminate risks associated with solvent disposal. All of the preceding are verifiable.
I think we’re well positioned to help you achieve your goal of eco-friendly packaging while protecting your product and maximizing its shelf appeal. Call me if you’d like to learn more.

biodegradable packaging
Brian Harrison...You can contact any of the major film companies to find biodegradable films. The laws in California have demanded that products are developed for packaging products with deadlines on biodegradability in land fills. Products cannot be manufactured or sold in not biodegradable or recycle materials.
Any bag maker can be equipped to the two main types of films. (Polyethylene and laminates). There are a few co packers in Ohio that might be interested in running your products. It really depends on the volumes you are talking about.
Thank you ,
Brian

We carry clear cellophane bags that are dual recyclable and biodegradable in all composting environments. Our bags are popular among start up snack companies due to our 1-case minimums, wide selection and quick turnarounds on in stock products. These bags are heat sealable and provide high clarity for marketing your product. We have an array of options as well. I've personally helped hundreds of companies like yours to green their snack packaging and would gladly be of assistance to you. I can be reached by phone at 888-740-8831 M-F from 10am to 6pm EST . Joel01b...It a great thing to see that people really take seriously the eco measures. From green energy to green packaging, everyone is getting on board with saving the planet. And, not only the environment will have something to gain, but also the health of the population. As more and more products are ecological and the packaging also becomes "green", less people will suffer from the many toxins food has these days. I have actually met someone in my career, while working in one of the alcohol treatment Washington Centers, who while drinking for many years large quantities of alcohol from the same place, became addicted to some chemical substance that was added in that drink. Apparently, it was a counterfeit drink and it was all filled with chemicals. Maybe with this new eco movement not only the products will be of higher quality, but the quality control department will be more active!
interesting
Kolo...I think that this idea, of green packaging, will help this small company sell their products. Although, it's a bit funny to sell one of the most health hazardous products, snacks, in a environment safe package. It's like you are saying we want to help the environment, but we don't really care about the people. After all, I have seen many people who have a weight problem, and all of them have it because they eat a lot of fast-food, at the massage NH clinic where I work. So, if I were to have the decision power, although many products like this take some very important eco friendly measures in the producing process, I would either not allow them to sell it or I would make them pay very high taxes and send those money in the health system!
