QR codes: do you use them on your product's package? Are you thinking about adding them? (as a way to show sustainability/recycling info, Nutrition Facts, other expanded info, or coupons and other special offers) Maybe a way to unclutter your package's design? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QR_codes (Wikipedia entry on QR codes)

QR codes when it comes to printing them on water resistant recyclable corrugated is almost impossible to complete, you cannot hold the line screen registration for proper scanning.
QR Codes
David Luttenberger...I'd challenge the notion the print quality necessary for scanning QR codes. I have personally demonstrated QR codes and Jagtags that clients have scanned with a camera phone litterally from my laptop computer screen and from a conference room screen on to which I was projecting a powerpoint presentation.
QR Codes

Hi Kathy,
I've been using them for about a year now http://pdesignlab.com/packaging-20.html within the entertainment industry and have found that it's a great way to deliver additional content of all sorts, directly to the consumer. Movie trailers, bonus footage, coupons, games and more.
For me it's a simple way to take the normal static packaging that everyone is used to... and enable it to become interactive.

QR codes and other alternatives

The two dimensional barcodes for Quick Response (QR codes) compete with radio frequency identification tags (RFID) on packaging to achieve basically the same end. A significant benefit of using QR codes is that their use is (currently) free of any licensing requirements, so it is an inexpensive option to implement. RFID tags can be configured to have a much wider variety of applications, store more data, and literally hundreds of items (on pallets, for example) can be scanned simultaneously ... but they do cost more.
Another technology trend that has interesting potential for the future of packaging is AR technology - or Augmented Reality. In this scenario the packaging could actually interact with devices like smart phones and such to deliver a wealth of information (sustainability/recycling info, Nutrition Facts, etc.) in a dynamic way.
QR Codes for Food Packaging
Tim Rose
Just because you can do it, doesn't mean you should do it. Food safety, promotion of healthier food and environmentally friendly packaging are demanding attention on packaging real estate. QR codes are sexy and cutting edge but with a limited food packaging footprint, can they be considered a necessity.Envision a shopper in the food store. They scan a product's bar code with their smart phone. Their phone app shows them competitive pricing and coupon availability. Are they now going to take additional time to scan a QR code for additional information? There will be exceptions to this (larger format packages in a segment given to promotion); but until a unique, valued, consumer functionality is tied to QR codes, one that can't be mirrored by an app tied to a product code, I expect limited adaptation of QR codes on primary food packaging.
Much wisdom here! Thank you,

Ronald Basel...I am actually asking for advice, and trust you might help.
I ma looking for a solution that can print these QR codes directly to rigid substrates with a long life ink, as well as the QR code generator.
Any help would be appreciated.

Our concept here is to use these QR codes on manufactured items each with a UNIQUE code containing manufacturing information that coul be "read" with the help of a cellphone QR code "reader".
Any help would be appreciated.

Setting up the unique codes with specific manufacturing info can definitely be done, into the millions of codes.
As far as the printing requirements and long life inks... I need a bit more scope. Feel free to email me some more info like what specific type of rigid substance and what environment the inks will be exposed to, directly at David at pdesignlab.com and I'll do my best to try and help.
