How can biodegradability be easily ascertained?

Many plastic groceries bags (LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE, blends) are nowadays labeled as "biodegradable." Is there a simple and easy method to determine these claims other than resorting to more complicated and time consuming ASTM standards?

Interesting you posted this in September and no company/person has replied. A couple of companies have approached me to buy their 'biodegradable plastic', which I'd like to use as a substitute to vinyl/bopp/plastic for flexographic printing. But, when asked for ASTM Certification, they have not been able to provide me anything. So, I'll stick with earthfirstPLA in the meantime.

Biodegradability of plastic packaging

William A. Forman...

Your comments are very interesting to me. Here in Colombia some LDPE converters are offering supposedly biodegradable grocery bags but offer no proof of such, hence my inquiry.

I will be in Southern California in February visiting daughters that live in La Cañada-Flintridge and Pasadena and would appreciate talking with you on this subject, if you were kind enough to provime me your phone number and business address.

Regtards,

Bill Forman

I have been using Bio-Flex for printing banners - they claim and have given ASTM sheets that their plastic will biodegrade in landfills over a 4-6 year period. The stuff is similar in strength and appearance to Vinyl. It's primarily composed of limestone with a small percentage of some kind of polymer as a binding agent.

Let's get together when you visit. I'm just next door to Pasadena.
