You have seen many changes in your packaging and not a thing about it has to do with the economy. If you take a second to catch your breath and look back a couple of years, it is obvious what the changes are about. Yes, it’s the environment, and we are not done yet.

Smart retail packaging is now:
- Sustainable
- Recyclable
- Economical
- Made locally

We are becoming less and less of a throw-away society. But what about those plastic t-sacks - are they still the scourge of the earth? No. Ironically, the lowly t-sack is now one of the leaders in the race for sustainable packaging and environmentally conscious change.

There is always more to the story than what you might read in a headline. Products become popular because they offer overall benefits that are superior to the products they replace. The popularity of plastic bags is a classic example of this.

Ironically, however, while plastic bags have taken the brunt of environmental attacks, the facts say they are superior from a green standpoint in many key areas such as energy usage, water, landfill reduction, recyclability, reusability, etc. The green movement is still young and evolving, so many answers are as yet unpublished.

I would strongly recommend to anyone interested the LCA made by PriceWaterhouseCoopers for Carrefour in 2004.

Lots of Truth in your post, but one caveat

There are lots of truths in your post, especially the comparison of plastic versus paper bags. You can Google "plastic versus paper" and gets tons of studies that show this.

One big caveat though, you had said that plastic bags are more recyclable than paper bags. In the U.S. I would disagree that this is true. While the amount of plastic bag recycling has grown (mostly through take back programs at grocery stores) the vast majority of these bags end up in landfill due to the lack of infrastructure. The material is indeed very recyclable, but there aren't good methods at the recycling facilities to separate them without gumming up their systems. Paper on the other hand is one of the most widely recycled materials in the U.S. with a very mature infrastructure (along with aluminum, steel, and glass). Until the infrastructure is developed, I would have to lean on the side of paper bags are currently more recyclable than plastic.

Watch this video: Health Concerns Surrounding Reusable Shopping Bags

As a working mother of 3, I do not have time to wash multiple reusable bags and keep up with what food products go in which bag for fear of contamination. I certainly want to be eco-friendly but like most moms, I have to be practical too. The bans and fees being assessed for using plastic bags in some communities totally misses the point for the environmental movement. The biggest problem is not the shopping bags, but all the packaging that comes with the products we buy and the fact that many local communities still do not have organized recycling programs. In addition, the fast food industry is not being targeted even though they cause an enormous negative environmental impact because of the food packaging thrown away or littered. In the meantime, I will continue to use plastic shopping bags and simply recycle them. Convenient, eco-friendly and no health risks.
