- MiraFoil brand technology from Henkel is a metallic coating which converters print directly in-line, eliminating the transportation, off-line processes, and difficult recycling associated with foil lamination and stamping.
Manufacturer's description
- Utilizing MiraFoil technology allows printers to save time and energy through process efficiencies, reduced transportation, and warehousing. Additionally, cartons produced with MiraFoil are fully recyclable through the de-inking process. This is a significant advantage when compared to foil laminated board and foil stamping. MiraFoil is a 100% solids, 0 VOCs, UV coating which can be applied to precise areas, reducing waste, improving quality, and shortening lead times. Environmental benefits and features include: Eliminating off-line lamination or foil stamping (which often include additional transportation). No more warehousing and lead time issues, as with laminated foil stocks. Reduces converting steps due to its foil-on-demand capability. Paperboard printed with MiraFoil is fully recyclable through the de-inking process.

There are a very limited number of municipal and institutional composting facilities in the U.S. While a material may be compostable, you must determine if the material, as used in your end-use application, will be compostable. The material or package complies with one or more of these three internationally recognized standards for compostability in industrial composting facilities: ASTM D6400, ASTM D6868-03, or CEN EN13432.
Waste-to-energy
This material or package has an energy value of greater than 5 megajoules per kilogram, thus meeting EU standard EN 13431 standard for waste-to-energy.
Renewable resources
It is expected that the FTC will provide guidance on what constitutes a renewable resource in the next version of the Environmental Marketing Claims guidelines, which is projected to come out in sometime this year. Once they have provided guidance, this claim will be added to this database and the third-party review process.
Important disclaimer about the third-party review process
In order to combat greenwashing, suppliers submitting data have volunteered to have their sustainability claims reviewed by a third-party. Third-party reviewers take a look at supplier documentation to check that it supports the claim, but make no attempt to verify or review documentation submitted for technical accuracy. Therefore, third-party reviewed claims do not constitute a statement of compliance with any laws or regulations, or a legal opinion as to the compliance of the language used in any claims or an approval or endorsement of product or services by Greener Package or the third-party. A review of materials by Greener Package and the third-party should not be used as a substitute for doing your own due diligence regarding supplier claims or seeking comprehensive professional advice about your particular packaging/product environmental claims.
