Liquid Planet drinks in benefits of compostable tea packaging
Organic tea company launches its full-leaf tea sachets in film overwraps made from renewable materials.
Beverage company Liquid Planet, Missoula, MT, has released its 100% organic tea packaged in single-serve, fully biodegradable and compostable sachets and clear overwraps, which they claim makes them the first company to do so commercially.
“Although tea companies have been packaging organic tea in recyclable boxes before, this is the first time a tea company has placed clear, single-serve organic tea on the retail market that is environmentally friendly from the tea leaf itself to the last ounce of packaging,” the company says.
Liquid Planet Tea is a 100% USDA organic-certified and KSA kosher-certified premium full-leaf tea enclosed in a nonbleached, biodegradable, and compostable sachet. The sachet is wrapped in a fully biodegradable and compostable cellulose overwrap and then packed into recyclable cartons made from post-consumer material in a facility that offsets its energy use with wind energy credits.
The company notes that the unique component of its packaging is the NatureFlex™ cellulose overwrap from Innovia Films. Although it appears like traditional plastic, instead of using petroleum-based film, it comprises renewable materials, making it biodegradable, compostable, and sustainable.

I believe Liquid Planet teas hit the market before Sept. 2009 and one of the claims of the press release is that the film is clear, unlike Five Mountains. In my opinion, it matters less who's absolutely first on the market, but that like-minded companies are taking sustainability to new levels. Hopefully, more in the packaging industry will follow!
