In keeping with its wholesome, environmentally conscious brand positioning, the new Weil Baby infant care line from Key Baby, LLC is packaged with tray inserts made of renewably sourced, compostable DuPont™ Biomax® TPS thermoplastic starch. Launched this summer and soon to be at retailer Babies “R” Us, the line’s packaging is entirely recyclable or biodegradable and is endorsed by leading physician and medical authority Dr. Andrew Weil.

According to DuPont, Biomax renewably sourced TPS enables consumer goods companies to reduce their environmental footprint by providing high-performance packaging from high-amylose starch for thermoformed trays and articles for food or nonfood packaging. The Biomax TPS used in this application consists of sheet material that contains 85% to 90% renewably sourced content. The sheet is then thermoformed by Plastic Package, Inc. into trays that hold the Weil Baby products in place inside a box. Biomax TPS is certified for home and industrial composting.


Converter Plastic Package says that collaboration with DuPont was important in the development of their new tray insert. “We worked with DuPont to take advantage of the high performance of Biomax to expand our offering and provide more sustainable solutions,” says Doug Hawkins, director of product development.

Among the benefits cited by DuPont of its renewably sourced materials verus petroleum-based products are a reduction in dependence on petroleum and, in many instances, a reduction in the net production of greenhouse gases and energy consumption when compared to incumbent products.
