When ABC News’ popular morning show, Good Morning America, needed guidance in selecting new consumer packaged goods products using sustainable packaging for a segment on its show, it turned to GreenerPackage.com for advice.
The report was part of Sam Champion's “Just One Thing” series, in which Champion shares with viewers "just one thing" they can do to adopt a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. The sustainable packaging segment aired on June 18, 2009, and, while GreenerPackage.com had urged GMA to consider a range of packages, including those with recycled content and those that had been redesigned for source reduction and space optimization, the show focused primarily on packaging using polylactic acid. Among the highlights were the new 33% PLA snack bag for Frito-Lay’s SunChips snack chips (see related story) and a rigid PLA container for Noble Juice fruit juice.
Despite comprehensive background materials prepared by GP.com for the show, GMA's coverage did not accurately present PLA to consumers, who already struggle to understand the complexities of sustainable packaging.
