PLA meat trays, pads offer alternative for Seattle foodservice operations

Especially suited to those Seattle food retailers looking for compostable or recyclable packaging to replace banned polystyrene, Sealed Air Corp. offers a polylactic acid foam meat tray, now available with a PLA pad.

The Cryovac® NatureTRAY small.jpgNatureTRAY™ was introduced in 2007 and is made entirely from NatureWorks® PLA polymers. The tray can be used for in-store packaging of beef, pork, poultry, and fish, as well as for produce and dry goods, and can be used on any standard, automated in-store supermarket wrapping equipment.

Delivering the same benefits as traditional PS foam trays, the NatureTRAY is also compostable in any industrial compost facility. It is available in a range of sizes and in an unpigmented white and a brown color.

This year, Sealed Air announced the addition of a processor-ready version of the NatureTRAY, NaturePAD small.jpgalong with the new Cryovac NaturePAD. The NaturePAD is a hybrid absorbent with a biodegradable top layer, a renewable pulp fluff core, and a nonwoven bottom layer made of polypropylene and PLA polymers.

The NaturePAD is available in three absorbencies: 40 g, 75 g, and 150g. The processor version of the NatureTRAY is available in one standard size and color—an all-natural unpigmented white tray with a #3 footprint.
