‘Corntainer’ completes the marketing message for organic fruit and nut blends.
For its bulk line of five Organic Acres brand dried fruit and nut blends, Tropical Foods, Charlotte, NC, has launched a corn-based plastic container that brand manager Chad Hartman says “is a logical fit with the organic product.”
“We pride ourselves on satisfying customers’ needs with organic fresh mixes, and these containers allow us to extend that same freshness to our packaging,” he adds.
The square container with resealable lid is made from polylactic acid and is supplied by Wilkinson Industries. The clear plastic package holds anywhere from 3 to 6 oz of product, depending upon nut and fruit ingredients. A green petroleum based-plastic shrink band around the lid is printed with the word “organic” to convey the product’s natural origins.
In addition to a primary label, Tropical Foods also adds a sticker on the container lid that promotes the “corn-based package.”
“We are using the corn-based container as a way to serve our custom mixes in a more environmentally appealing manner,” says Hartman. “It has a smaller packaging footprint."
